There is suddenly a demand for more sustainability when it comes to almost all products, and that is also true with branded notebooks as well as gift ideas. Our industry is full of straight-to-landfill tat, but we believe that there is a better way.

Finally changes are happening, solutions are quickly being found. We can already offer a great range of more eco-friendly ideas, and more and better ones will follow if demand increases.

Q&A Sustainable Stationery

  • Yes, and no. Yes in that a lot of stationery is paper-based and so is already more recyclable than many other products. But no for many reasons that you might want to think about.

So anything plastic - such as pens - is a problem for sustainability. Even some notebooks have a cover that is made from a PU (i.e. plastic-based) substance. That is why a notebook like the Castelli Nature stands out. It is entirely paper-based and so can be recycled once used.

  • No, even a notebook like the Castelli Tucson will need the cover removing before you can recycle the paper inside. That said, many if not most people will keep notebooks as they are full of useful information.

  • The answer is hopefully. This is where you get into FSC and recycled paper, knowing where the paper originated from. Most paper is in quality notebooks like ours is FSC (i.e. from a responsibly managed source), but it is worth looking out for.

  • So a lot of pens will be a problem here as they use plastic, and not just for the barrel but for the refill inside. There are now new pens on the market that use bio-plastics, such as the Senator Liberty Bio pen.

This is a big step forward, but still leaves some parts of the pen such as the clip and refill using non-bio plastic. And recycling a bio-plastic pen is not as straightforward as you might wish it to be.

  • Well, long before we invented the ballpoint pen we came up with a more sustainable solution. The pencil. Yes, the humble pencil may well be the answer to your sustainability problems. With no plastic to worry about, it is also a popular choice just for its simplicity and even a cool-factor that a pen can’t match.
