So the question that will naturally follow is What is a biopolymer and how is this different to plastic? Well there's only so far you want to go down this rabbit hole, but here goes. A polymer is simply a chain of molecules that forms a material or substance - everything from your plastic water bottle to your DNA is a polymer. A biopolymer is made up of molecules formed by natural sources rather than say fossil fuels, fermenting sugars for example. PHA biopolymers, which are what these pens are made from, are a naturally-synthesized and completely degradable type of 'plastic'. These pens can therefore be popped under your plants in the garden where they will degrade in a couple of months. It is biodegradable in the soil though not suitable for household waste recycling.
